                    I. PROLOGUE: THE WORLD BEFORE
================================================================================

The world before was one of ordinary lives and extraordinary potential.
Small towns, sprawling suburbs, industrial districts, and endless stretches
of wilderness spread across every continent. People lived their daily
routines, unaware that their world existed at the edge of an interstellar
conflict that had been raging for millennia across the cosmos.

In the year 2030, humanity's greatest achievements stood as monuments to
progress: advanced medical technology, renewable energy systems, and the
early stages of space exploration. They had no idea what was coming.

================================================================================
                    II. THE ARRIVAL: FIRST CONTACT
================================================================================

They came without warning.

The first signals were dismissed as cosmic background noise. By the time
military installations detected the fleet entering Earth's orbit, it was
already too late. The invaders—beings whose true form humanity would never
fully comprehend—had been observing our world for decades. They had studied
our technology, our biology, and our weaknesses with cold, calculating
precision.

The invasion did not begin with fire from the sky or massive warships
descending upon cities. It began with a whisper—a nano-technological
pathogen released into Earth's atmosphere. The aliens understood something
fundamental: why waste resources conquering a species when you could turn
them against themselves?

================================================================================
                    III. THE NANO-PLAGUE: BIRTH OF THE UNDEAD
================================================================================

The Nano-Plague, as survivors would come to call it, was a masterwork of
biological and technological warfare. Microscopic machines, invisible to
the naked eye, infiltrated human hosts through air, water, and food supplies.
Within weeks, billions were infected.

The nanites did not kill their hosts immediately. Instead, they rewrote the
fundamental code of human biology. Brain function was reduced to base
instincts—aggression, hunger, an unrelenting drive to spread the infection.
Higher cognitive function was suppressed but not destroyed entirely, leaving
the infected as shambling horrors that retained fragments of motor memory.

"The zombies have a strange glow to them," wrote one survivor in their final
note. "I don't know what is causing it, but whatever it is, it's been keeping
them alive all this time."

That glow is the visible manifestation of active nanite colonies within the
infected tissue. The nanites regenerate cellular damage, provide limited
healing capabilities, and most importantly, ensure that the infected remain
mobile threats indefinitely. While enough sustained damage to any part of
the body can overwhelm the nanites' repair capabilities, experienced
survivors know that targeting the head—where the nanite command clusters
are concentrated—is the most efficient method of neutralization.

The Infected evolved over time:
- NORMAL ZOMBIES: Standard infected with baseline nanite activity
- FERAL ZOMBIES: Enhanced aggression from overactive nanite stimulation
- RADIATED ZOMBIES: Corrupted nanites that emit harmful radiation and
  possess regenerative capabilities

================================================================================
                    IV. THE MACHINE WAR: ROBOTS AND MECHS
================================================================================

While the Nano-Plague reduced humanity to mindless hordes, the aliens
deployed the second phase of their extermination protocol: autonomous
war machines.

These robots were entirely of alien design—technology far beyond anything
humanity had ever conceived. Massive dropships descended from orbit,
deploying legions of mechanical killers across every continent. Within
weeks, an army of machines marched across the planet with a single
directive programmed into their cores:

**ELIMINATE ALL BIOLOGICAL LIFE. UNDEAD OR NOT.**

The machines come in several classifications:

All robotic units contain Nano Chips—small computing devices of alien origin
that survivors can harvest for crafting advanced technology.

================================================================================
                    V. TERRAFORMING: A DYING WORLD TRANSFORMED
================================================================================

The final phase of the invasion is ongoing: terraforming.

The aliens are systematically reshaping Earth's biosphere to suit their own
biological needs. Different regions show varying stages of this process:

THE PINE FOREST
Once verdant woodlands now grow strange new species of trees—Beech and
Oak variants that were never native to Arizona. The alien terraforming
has accelerated plant growth while simultaneously making the forest home
to basic robotic patrols. This is considered the "safest" zone, relatively
speaking, though danger lurks behind every tree.

THE DESERT
The arid landscape remains largely unchanged, but Nano Drones now patrol
the skies above, scanning for signs of human life. The desert's abundant
resources—particularly Oil Shale and Yucca Fruit—draw desperate scavengers,
making it a hunting ground for both mechanical predators and the infected.

THE SNOW BIOME
The frozen north has become a killing field. Robot Dogs and Spider Bots
equipped with infrared tracking systems hunt their prey with merciless
efficiency. Combat Dogs with high-tech laser weapons patrol the frozen
wastes at night, searching for any signs of life to exterminate.

THE BURNT FOREST
A wasteland of ash and dead trees, the Burnt Forest represents zones
devastated by the initial invasion. Firebombing campaigns and energy
weapon discharges left entire regions scorched. The dead landscape
provides little cover from robotic patrols.

THE WASTELAND
Once densely populated urban centers now lie in ruins—reduced to rubble
and twisted metal beams. This is where the heaviest fighting occurred,
and where the most dangerous threats now dwell.

The Wasteland is patrolled by heavy-duty Mechs and Droids with a single
directive: kill on sight. Feral and Radiated Zombies roam the destroyed
streets, their nanite-enhanced bodies warped by exposure to the alien
technology. Landmines—both human and alien—litter the debris, and
explosions echo across the devastated landscape as friend and foe alike
trigger these hidden hazards.

Acid rain falls in the Wasteland, carrying radioactive contamination that
will poison any survivor caught without shelter. Those who enter rarely
return, but those who do bring back tales of incredible salvage and
resources worth the deadly risk.

================================================================================
                    VI. THE CURRENT STATE: YEAR ZERO
================================================================================

The calendar has been reset. Survivors count days from "Year Zero"—the
collapse of organized civilization. No governments remain. No militaries
stand against the alien occupation. The population of Earth has been
reduced to scattered pockets of survivors fighting for every breath.

The aliens themselves remain largely unseen. Whether they are directing
operations from orbit, already walking among the terraformed zones, or
still en route to claim their reshaped world, no one knows. Their
machines continue their work with cold efficiency.

Every seven days, the machines coordinate a massive assault known as the
Robot Horde. During these blood moon nights, waves of mechanical and
undead enemies converge on any location showing signs of human activity.
Survivors must fortify, prepare, and fight—or be overwhelmed.

================================================================================
                    VII. THE RESISTANCE AND KEY CHARACTERS
================================================================================

Despite the overwhelming odds, humanity refuses to die quietly.

THE RESISTANCE
An organized network of survivors connected by salvaged radio equipment
and desperate courage. The Resistance operates from hidden outposts,
coordinating supply drops, sharing intelligence, and recruiting new
Rangers to the cause.

SGT. FURY
The voice of the Resistance. Sgt. Fury coordinates rescue operations and
guides new survivors to safety through encrypted radio transmissions.
Little is known about Fury's location or background, but their calm,
professional demeanor has saved countless lives.

"Pshh! Come in Ranger. We've intercepted your distress signal and have
marked your map with the nearest White River Outpost location. There you
will find a Trader where you can buy and sell goods and get yourself
patched up; they may also have some work for you. Good Luck, Sgt. Fury"

THE WHITE RIVER FACTION
A coalition of traders and survivors who have established fortified
outposts throughout the region. The White River Runners serve as both
merchants and employers, offering quests to capable survivors while
maintaining the only semblance of an economy in the post-apocalyptic world.

THE TRADERS
Each White River outpost is managed by a Trader—individuals who have
carved out defensible positions and accumulated resources worth
protecting. The Traders are:

TRADER LUNA
Located in the Pine Forest biome, Luna specializes in Food and Farming
supplies. Her operation focuses on sustainable survival—seeds, preserved
foods, and agricultural equipment. She represents the first step for new
survivors entering the White River network, offering initial quests and
basic supplies. Luna operates from a fortified position using repurposed
trader robot technology for protection.

TRADER JEN
Operating from Jen's Clinic in the Burnt Forest, this trader specializes
in Medical supplies. Bandages, antibiotics, and radiation treatments
are her stock in trade. She may seem friendly at first, but wise
survivors watch their backs around her establishment. Jen also utilizes
robotic assistance, her trader unit having been reprogrammed to serve
rather than kill.

TRADER BOB
A general goods merchant with no particular specialization. Bob provides
a balanced selection of survival equipment and serves as a waypoint
between the beginner-friendly traders and the more dangerous zones.

TRADER HUGH
Operating in more hazardous territory, Hugh maintains a neutral stance
toward newcomers. His supplies reflect the increased danger of his
location, with higher-tier equipment available for those who can
afford his prices.

TRADER JOEL
The most experienced of the White River traders, Joel is a clothes and
armor specialist. His outpost represents the final step in the trader
progression, offering the best equipment available. Survivors who reach
Joel have proven themselves capable Rangers worthy of the finest gear.

The trader progression follows a specific path as survivors prove their
capabilities:
  Trader Luna → Trader Jen → Trader Bob → Trader Hugh → Trader Joel

================================================================================
                    X. HOPE IN THE DARKNESS
================================================================================

To whoever finds this note:

"Things went south fast. We got ambushed by a swarm of bots, and we
couldn't hold 'em off. They tore through us like paper; they seem to be
programmed to kill any signs of life, undead or not. The zombies have a
strange glow to them; I don't know what is causing it, but whatever it is,
it's been keeping them alive all this time.

I'm scribbling this down quick 'cause I can't keep up anymore. My suit is
busted up bad, and I'd only slow down the rest. So, I'm staying put.

But listen, there's hope. I've concealed a capsule with this note. Inside,
you'll find gear that might just keep you going—maps, supplies, tools.
Use them well, for all our sakes.

Stay strong, stay alive. We're counting on you to keep the fight alive."

                                        — A Fallen Member of The Resistance

The invasion may have shattered civilization, but it did not break the
human spirit. In hidden bunkers and fortified outposts, survivors learn
to fight back. They salvage alien technology, repurpose robot components,
and craft weapons capable of matching the mechanical hordes.

The White River faction grows stronger every day. The Resistance continues
its broadcasts, guiding new Rangers to safety. And somewhere out there,
the key to defeating the alien invaders waits to be discovered.

This is District Zero. This is humanity's last stand.

The fight continues.
